What is ERP software?

ERP stands for Enterprise Resource Planning. It is a type of software that companies use to manage day-to-day business functions like accounting, project management, field operations, risk management, supply chain operations, procurement, and more.

ERP systems essentially tie together multiple business processes and enable the flow of data between them, which helps eliminate data duplication and provide data integrity with a single source of truth.

What’s the difference between Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 ERP vendors?

ERP software is placed in three different categories. Here’s a quick overview:

  • Tier 1 is typically for larger, enterprise level companies with an extensive global partner network. Tier 1 ERPs tend to be the most expensive (8-10 figures), but also provides the most flexibility for solving complex business problems.
  • Tier 2 is for mid-level companies with a strong network of partners, but is more focused on local operations with some international requirements. The cost is typically between 7 or 8 figures. Tier 2 ERPs are usually more industry-focused with a bit less complexity than Tier 1. RAD Associates specializes in Tier 2 ERPs.
  • Tier 3 is for (you guessed it), smaller and mid-sized businesses with local operations that don’t need expensive, complex solutions to run day-to-day tasks. This tier is the list expensive coming in at under 6 figures.

How do you know when you’ve outgrown Tier 2 or Tier 3?

For Tier 2, if your transaction volume has increased and caused slowness, you’re becoming more reliant of outside systems, need heavy customization or integrations, or have advanced compliancy requirements such as HIPPA, ITAR, SOCS, you’re likely a candidate for a Tier 1 ERP.

If you need full audit tracking, have additional users, or your requirements are becoming more complex, you should consider moving from a Tier 3 to a Tier 2 software.

Upgrading to Tier 2 is more feature rich. This allows users to use the out-of-the-box functions rather than develop customization or use 3rd-party integrations. Tier 2 software has an audit trail which means users can no longer delete a transaction or change a date, which could be fraudulent. Instead correcting entries against the original transaction is required and tracked through history.

How do I know which ERP is best for my company?

There are many factors that go into making this very important decision. Every business is different, but we recommend using the following checklist as a guide:

  • Your organization’s industry
  • The number of employees in the organization
  • The total revenue of the organization
  • The complexity of the organization’s processes
  • The number of users who will require access to the ERP
  • The features needed to run the organization
  • Complexity of requirements
  • Budget
